Villa CS

Villa CS is a contemporary villa in Budapest that reinterprets the spatial and lifestyle traditions of California Modern architecture within a Central European context. In reality, the intellectual roots of the modern villa lie closer to Central Europe than might first appear. California’s mid-century modernism did not emerge in isolation: many of its protagonists carried with them the ideas of the European avant-garde. Richard Neutra, for example, was educated in Vienna in the intellectual environment shaped by figures such as Adolf Loos, whose radical rethinking of domestic space and material culture profoundly influenced the development of modern residential architecture.

Villa CS explores how the principles of the California Modern villa can be translated into a contemporary Central European setting: the living space opening towards the garden, the careful orchestration of light and shadow, pavilion-like massing, the direct architectural expression of structure, and the complete coherence of interior architecture and material use with these ideas.
